Asamoah Gyan signs for Legon Cities in GPL return

The all-time Ghana top scorer is back for domestic football after 17 years.

Legendary striker Asamoah Gyan has sealed a return to the Ghana Premier League for one season with moneybags Legon Cities FC.

The official Ghana Premier League account confirmed the well-rumoured deal on the 2020/21 season transfer deadline day:

At 34, Gyan is returning to the domestic topflight some 17 years after leaving for Europe.

He had scored 10 goals in 16 appearances for boyhood club Liberty Professionals in his debut season in the Ghana Premier League in 2003.

But halfway through the campaign, Italian side Udinese offered Gyan his first opportunity in Europe.

Gyan’s career journey outside Ghana has seen him play for 10 clubs including Sunderland, Al Ain, Shanghai SIPG, Kaayserispor and more recently India’s NorthEast United, combining 171 goals in 361 appearances.

Asamoah Gyan left NorthEast United in January this year and has not actively played for more than nine months now.
