New boy Djiku gives Black Stars many options, says Akonnor

Ghana coach Charles Akonnor has expressed content over the decision of Alexander Djiku to play for the Black Stars.

The French-born defender was named in the senior national team’s 23-man squad for the international friendlies in October.

Djiku, who plays for French side RC Strasbourg, has been monitored by the Stars handlers for long and the elated Akonnor says the new boy gives the team options.

“I am personally excited about him. At a point in time, we were not sure if he really wanted to come. He didn’t have a problem switching nationality.

“Djiku is not only a centre-back. He can play in the holding role as well depending on what area you want to go in terms of when you play away games.”

Akonnor continued: “That’s if you want to be very defensive. I saw him in Strasbourg when I went to watch him and I’m happy he is coming.

The 26-year-old  has featured in all four games of Strasbourg in the 2020/21 season.

He is expected to make his debut for the Black Stars against Mali on October 9 in Turkey.
