COVID-19: Mozambique ponder season change

Mozambique are looking to use the postponement of the start of their 2020 league season, because of the novel COVID-19 health crisis, as an opportunity to change the timing of the campaign.

The MocamBola was due to start on April 4 but suspended because of the lockdown.

The season in the country has traditionally run inside the calendar year, from April to December.

But there have long been plans to follow other countries in the COSAFA region, like Angola and South Africa plus the annual African club competitions, and change to a season that starts in August and May and the delay in getting the 2020 campaign underway presents an opportunity to finally implement.

It will be discussed by league officials and the leadership of the Mozambique Football Federation and has been given a rousing endorsement by national team coach Luís Gonçalves.

“I can only see positive aspects with the change of the season. It will allow players who play outside the country and inside to be competing at the same time and on the same level in competitive terms,” said the Portuguese-born coach.

Also for Gonçalves, the fact that the European leagues ends at the same time as that in Mozambique will make it easier for players to transfer to clubs in Portugal … or vice-versa.
