Afcon 2021Q: Richmond Boakye ruled out of Ghana vs Sudan

Ghana has lost the services of Richmond Boakye Yiadom ahead of this month’s 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying doubleheader with Sudan through injury.

The striker, who was in line to make a return to the Black Stars after a two-year absence, picked up the injury last Sunday – two days before head coach CK Akonnor announced his squad.

Boakye had started for Red Star in the Serbian League Belgrade derby deadlock with rivals Partizan – but he was substituted 34 minutes into the home game having sustained an injury.

Following an assessment on the extent of the injury, the 27-year-old has been confirmed to be ruled out for at least three weeks which means he will not recover in time for the March international break.

Black Stars coach Akonnor is expected to call up a replacement into his squad.

Ghana will be hosting Sudan in the first of back-to-back Group C games at Cape Coast Stadium on March 27 and then face the Falcons of Jediane in the reverse three days after.
