2019/20 GPL: Legon Cities beat Sharks with last-gasp penalty

Legon Cities, in dramatic fashion, secured their second win of the 2019/20 Ghana Premier League by beating Elmina Sharks 1-0 with a last-gasp penalty Wednesday.

The visitors thought they had done enough to snatch a point from the match-day 8 clash at the Accra Sports Stadium but as the clock ticked into stoppage time, the ball hit the hand of captain Daniel Obeng Crentsil.

Referee Christopher Asante awarded a penalty to Legon Cities and forward Abdul Karim Jabila converted the decisive penalty to ensure the Royals won the day.

On the touchline, Sharks coach Yaw Acheampong strongly disagreed with the penalty decision in despair and did not miss the chance to register his displeasure at the performance of the referee.

He said at post-match: “We created the better chances and should have scored in the first half. Our system – 4-1-3-2 – was okay and went according to plan.

“But you see, when you play and the referee starts frustrating your team, sometimes it disorganizes the plan.”

“When the league started we were all expected free and fair officiating. I am not happy about the officiating in today’s game,” coach Acheampong, the ex-international added.

Legon Cities are now 13th on the league table with 9 points while Sharks sit just behind them a point less.
