2019/20 GPL: Giant killers Berekum Chelsea slay Kotoko in Kumasi

Berekum Chelsea produced another giant-killing feat by travelling to beat Asante Kotoko 1-0 in a 2019/20 Ghana Premier League match-day 3 clash on Sunday.

The Bibires backed up their upset of Hearts of Oak who they beat by same scoreline in a season opener in Accra with another big-name scalp this time at the Baba Yara Sport Stadium in Kumasi.

Berekum Chelsea struck early, clipped Kotoko on the wings and were very resolute in defence with the centre-back partnership of Ahmed Adams and Emmanuel Owusu who were out to prove a point against their former club.

Former GPL goal King Kofi Owusu unsettled the Porcupines with the only goal of the game on 7 minutes.

The attacker fed on a neat Jeorge Renchi pass inside the box before beating Felix Annan with a shot into the left bottom corner.

While struggling to break the visitors down, things further went south for Kotoko midway into the second.

Defender Empem Dacosta got sent off by referee Charles Bulu for an off-the-wall incident in the 76th minute. The centre-back was adjudged to have stamped on a Berekum Chelsea in an altercation after a free-kick was awarded the Porcupines.

The decision did not go down well with the Kotoko faithful in the stands who decided to pelt missiles onto the pitch.

There was an additional time of 8 minutes as a result of the stoppages that followed the crowd misbehaviour but tried as they did, Kotoko failed to avoid their first defeat of the season at home.

Berekum Chelsea deservedly walked away with full points which pushed them up the league table to 6th position. They next host Dreams FC at Golden City Park.

Kotoko, on the other hand, drop to 8th position on six points ahead of a tricky midweek trip to Tarkwa where they face in-form Medeama SC on Wednesday.
