2019/20 GPL: Berekum Chelsea upset AshGold in Obuasi

Giant-killers Berekum Chelsea continued their winning run by pulling off yet another shock win – 1-0 over AshantiGold at their own backyard – in a 2019/20 Ghana Premier League match-day five clash Saturday.

Striker Kofi Owusu, who made the headlines in the win against Kotoko last Sunday, this time again goes into the records books with his goal which handed the Bibires their very first league win against the Miners at Len Clay Stadium in Obuasi since gaining Premiership status in 2009.

Owusu took full advantage of an awful howler by AshantiGold goalkeeper Frank Boateng to score the only goal of the encounter on 53 minutes.

Acting AshantiGold coach Yussif Mambo made three tactical changes in their squad from their previous encounter away to Legon Cities as Musah Mohammed, Mark Agyekum and skipper Shafiu Mumuni made way for David Abagna, Razak Simpson and Benjamin Eshun respectively.

Mumuni is on his way out of the club in the January transfer window.

Clearly the tactical changes didn’t pay off as AshantiGold failed to play to their potential like they mostly do at home.

Berekum Chelsea, who kept their starters from the last game, looked compact and composed. They only showed their real attacking edge in the 51st minute when Jonah Attuquaye saw his effort, after a nice combination with attacking partner Kofi Owusu, narrowly miss the target.

And Owusu was available two minutes later to pounce on a goalkeeping mishap with what turned out the match-winner.

With this win, Berekum Chelsea have now astonishingly beaten Hearts of Oak, Asante Kotoko and AshantiGold in back-to-back away games. They are also unbeaten so far this season, having drawn to Liberty and beaten Dreams FC in their two home games.
