Caf CL: Etoile take aim at confident Al Ahly

Etoile du Sahel will face fellow former winners Al Ahly in the 2019/20 Caf Champions League Group B match at the Stade Olympique de Radès in Tunisia on Friday.

The Tunisian giants have set their sights on ending the wait for their second title having won the most prestigious club competition in Africa 12 years ago.

Nicknamed the Jewel Coast, Etoile have brought in accomplished Spanish coach Juan Carlos Garrido, who won the 2014 Caf Confederation Cup with Al Ahly.

Garrido has made it known that he wants to win the Champions League with the Jewel Coast this season.

“My main objective is the Caf Champions League title, and it’s the same for the players,” Garrido said.

‘This is not an easy group we are facing so we don’t have to underestimate any teams.

“However, we are aware that we are among the best teams so we want to start the Caf Champions League journey on a positive note.”

Meanwhile, Al Ahly are keen to deliver the elusive ninth Champions League title this season having won the competition a record eight times.

The Egyptian football powerhouse also have a new coach in Rene Weiler and the Swiss tactician is in his first coaching job in Africa.

Weiler has admitted that he would love to win the continental title with the Red Devils and he also revealed that they have studied Etoile.

“It’s the right of Ahly fans to hope for a Champions League crown this season, and it’s also a personal dream for me,” Weiler said.

“But we must not lose sight of the fact that there are strong competitors and they have high-profile coaches and distinguished players, and their ambition is to win the title.

“It’s an essential part of my job to study my opponents and we already did that with Etoile. We know a lot about them.”

The last competitive meeting between Etoile and Al Ahly was on the 22nd of October 2017.

Al Ahly emerged 6-2 winners over Etoile in the Champions League semifinal second-leg match in Egypt.
