Wafu Cup: It’s more difficult retaining title, says Ghana coach

Maxwell Konadu, coach of defending champions Ghana says it is more difficult to win the West Africa Football Union (Wafu) Cup of Nations title this time that his side did on home-soil in 2017.

The home-based Black Stars have so far clinched two victories in the ongoing edition in Senegal – beating The Gambia 1-0 and then Friday night’s 5-4 penalty shootout triumph over Burkina Faso after a 1-1 draw.

Konadu’s charges are now in the semifinals scheduled for Wednesday, October 9.

“We knew everything was possible, we didn’t get demoralized. We knew we could win the game. So we took it in good faith and gather ourselves together and won together,” Konadu said in reaction to the Burkina Faso scalp.

Touching on retaining the title, the trainer noted that “it will be difficult.”

“Even when we won the title two years ago, It’s no different from this one [2019 Wafu Cup]. This one is more difficult.

“Football in Africa is growing year after year. Our first match we won 1-0, second match 1-1. It tells you how difficult it is.”

Ghana will face the winner of Cote d’Ivoire and Togo tie in the semifinals of the 2019 Wafu Cup.
