U-23 Afcon: Tanko confident of Olympic Games ticket

Black Meteors coach, Ibrahim Tanko is confident of masterminding Ghana’s return to the Olympic Games despite being drawn in a tough group for the 2019 U-23 Africa Cup of Nations.

Ghana have been pitted against hosts Egypt, Cameroon and Mali in Group A of the 8-nation tournament which doubles as qualifiers to the Summer 2020 Olympics. The top three finishers will represent Africa.

“Very tough group, but I am very sure we can overcome,” Tanko remarked after Wednesday’s draw in Cairo.

He went on: “If you want to qualify, you have to win any match that you’re faced with. We have to prepare well so that we can achieve our targets. All the teams will be eyeing qualification to the Olympic Games.

“I prefer this kind of group than the so-called easy group in competitions.

“With such, you know the stakes are high so you give your all from the beginning because all the teams are strong.

“In all competitions, the first game is very important. And our first game will be against Cameroon, which I believe we can win.”

After the Cameroon group opener on November 8, Ghana will next take on Mali and hosts Egypt on November 11 and 14 respectively.

The last time Ghana’s Black Meteors featured at the Olympic Games was in Athens 2004.
