Caf CL: Kotoko, Étoile set for tasty group stage play-off

Asante Kotoko and Tunisia’s Étoile Sportive du Sahel (ESS) will next battle it out for a ticket to the 2019/20 Caf Champions League group stage in September.

The Ghanaian giants, on Sunday, turned around a 3-2 deficit with a 2-0 victory to kick Nigeria’s Kano Pillars out of the competition on a 4-3 aggregate.

Étoile, on the other hand, won heavily by trouncing Hafia Club of Guinea 7-1 at home on Saturday to progress with an 8-3 aggregate scoreline.

Kotoko will host the first leg of their tasty clash with the North Africans at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Sunday, September 15.

The reverse leg comes off at Stade Olympique de Sousse a fortnight later.

Kotoko and Étoile last met 11 years ago – during the group stage of the 2008 Caf Confederation Cup competition. The Porcupines were held 2-2 at home by Étoile after losing 2-0 in the away fixture.

Successful elimination of ESS next month will see Kotoko return to the group stage of the Caf Champions League for the first time since 2006. But should they exit, the Porcupine Warriors will drop to the Confederation Cup group stage playoffs.
