Gideon Mensah extends Red Bull contract to 2024

Young Ghana defender Gideon Mensah has extended his stay at Austrian Bundesliga giants Red Bull Salzburg by a further three seasons.

The 20-year-old left-back’s contract will now run until end of May 2024.

Mensah joined Die Roten Bullen on a five-year deal in summer 2016 from Ghanaian topflight side WAFA SC.

In his debut season, Mensah helped the club to win the 2016/17 Uefa Youth League but had to spend subsequent seasons on loan at feeder club FC Liefering in the Austrian second second-tier.

He spent the second part of last season on another loan spell but in the topflight with Sturm Graz where he managed 15 league appearances.

Impressed with his growth, Red Bull decided to extend Mensah’s stay.

“Gideon Mensah has recently developed very well and has shown strong performances on his loan,” Red Bull’s sporting director Christoph Freund said.

“We are convinced that he will play an important role in our future as well and have given him our trust with this long-term contract,” he added.

Gideon Mensah is a member of the Ghana Under-23 team chasing qualification to the football tournament at Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
