Akonnor sacked as Kotoko coach

Despite leading them to qualify for the 2019/20 Caf Champions League, Asante Kotoko have decided to dispense with the services of head coach CK Akonnor.

”Yes, I’m no more the coach of Asante Kotoko; I’m even in Accra now.

“I was asked to step aside and take over as technical director. I can’t comment [further] for now,” the 44-year-old confirmed.

The shock move, sources say, was largely championed by the club’s executive chairman Kwame Kyei.

He is said to have little belief in Akonnor’s ability to take the Porcupine Warriors to expected heights in the coming season hence the decision to ‘elevate’ the ex-Ghana international who flatly rejected the offer, Footy-Ghana.com is told.

Footy-Ghana.com understands that the Kotoko chief made similar attempts after they exited the 2018/19 Caf Confederation Cup back in March but failed to get his wish as fans and management members kicked against it.

Asante Kotoko’s performance post the Confederation Cup campaign sharply went on a decline, leaving many a fan to question what might have hit the team. But coach Akonnor explained it to be due to injuries that hit some key players along the line. He preferred efficiency to beautiful football and managed to grind his way through to win the Normalization Special Cup Tier-One competition in June.

A foreign coach is reportedly being considered to replace Akonnor while there is also a possibility of luring former trainer Maxwell Konadu back to the club.

CK Akonnor succeeded Paa Kwasi Fabin as Kotoko head coach on a three-year deal in October 2018.
