Afcon 2019: Gyan, Boye in 29-man Ghana preliminary squad

Ghana’s provisional squad for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) has been announced with striker Asamoah Gyan among 29-listed players.

Head coach Kwasi Appiah opted to stick to his usual three suspects in the goalkeeping department while calling up as many as ten defenders, 11 midfielders and five outright strikers for the Black Stars’ UAE training camp from June 1.

Appiah made room for three locals, namely; Felix Annan and Abdul Fatawu Safiu of Asante Kotoko as well as Hearts of Oak’s Mohammed Alhassan.

Receiving a first-time call-up is FK Cukaricki of Serbia winger Samuel Kwame Owusu while Chelsea left-back Baba Abdul Rahman (on loan at Reims) gets to make a return to the national team since the horrific injury at the last Afcon finals in Gabon which slowed down his club career.

Two players from the Ghana U-23 team, Black Meteors – Yaw Yeboah and Kwabena Owusu who feature for Spanish clubs have also been given a chance to stake a claim for spots in the final squad for Egypt 2019.

While holding their training camp in Dubai, the Black Stars are scheduled to play high-profile friendlies against two Afcon-bound sides Namibia and South Africa.
