Afcon 2019: Ghana President summons coach over Gyan retirement

Ghana’s President, Nana Akufo-Addo, Tuesday, summoned a meeting to receive proper briefing and deliberate ‘solutions’ to the issues that led to the shock retirement of striker Asamoah Gyan.

The 33-year-old, Monday evening, excused himself from the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations while also “permanently” calling time on his international career.

The tone of Gyan’s statement sounded the feel of betrayal by the coach Appiah who reportedly had decided to hand another player the Black Stars captaincy while the country’s top scorer remains with the team at the Egypt tournament.

According to presidential spokesperson Eugene Arhin, the Ghana leader is not interfering in the decisions of Kwasi Appiah and is backing him in the country’s quest to end a 37-year Afcon trophy drought.

Ghana’s provisional squad for the Afcon is expected to be officially confirmed by close of Wednesday.
