Caf CC: Kotoko skipper confident despite Coton Sport threat

Asante Kotoko captain, Amos Frimpong is adamant the side has enough quality to qualify to the group stage of the 2018/19 Caf Confederation Cup at the expense of Coton Sport FC.

The Porcupine Warriors travel to face the Cameroonian champions in the first leg of the playoffs at the Military Stadium in Yaoundé on Sunday, January 13 with the second leg scheduled to come off in Kumasi a week later.

“Looking at the quality in our team this season, I have confidence in my teammates and technical team that we can secure a win,” club captain Frimpong told Footy-Ghana.com ahead of their trip on Friday.

The versatile defender however reckons Coton Sport’s challenge would be tougher than what they faced against Kenya’s Kariobangi Sharks in the previous stage.

“It’s going to be a difficult and tougher game but no matter what happens we will qualify after the two legs. “Coton Sport is above Kariobangi Sharks in terms of everything – player quality, experience in the Africa game. So they’ll be tougher.

“We expect a tough game from Coton Sport. They dropped from the Champions League into the Confederation cup and that alone makes them stronger than Sharks,” Frimpong opined.

Frimpong says the squad is responding positively to coach C.K Akonnor’s training ahead of the crucial tie.

“After the holidays, every player has reported and we are responding well to the training. There has been a lot of improvement in our training activities compared to when we were facing Sharks. You can see that everyone is serious at training.

“We’ve watched some videos of Coton Sport and clearly they’re giants in the African game; that has made us double our efforts at training.”

Asante Kotoko will fly out to Cameroon on Friday via ASKY Airlines and are scheduled to return to Ghana on Tuesday, January 15.
