Afcon 2019 hosts: Africa heads to Egypt

The Confederation of African Football (Caf) has handed the hosting rights of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations to Egypt.

The North African nation gained the opportunity despite competition from 2013 hosts South Africa. Both countries were nominated after the African football governing body stripped Cameroon off as hosts of the tourney due to delay and security concerns.

With four months more till the Afcon begins, Egypt, who only announced their intentions to host the tournament after fellow North African nation Morocco pulled out, will only strengthen their already delightful facilities as they await other 23 national teams – Caf’s first 24-nation senior competition.

The 2006 hosts will aim for another host and win campaign just like in 2006 when Mohammed Aboutreika, Mohammed Barakat, Wael Gomaa, Ahmed Hassan, legendary goalkeeper Essam El Hadary among other stars, capped off a wonderful experience by claiming the trophy against Didier Drogba’s Ivory Coast.

Ghana will be in search for their first Afcon title since 1982. The Black Stars played on Egyptian soil in 2017, losing 2-0 to the Pharaohs in a 2018 Fifa World Cup qualifier.

For Egypt, the Afcon will be another chance to conquer Africa with reigning African Footballer of the Year Mohammed Salah. The Liverpool winger helped the North Africans qualify for the Fifa World Cup in Russia last year for the first time since 1990. Another adventure begins!
