Gladys Lengwe: Zambian referee handed AWCON 2018 final

Zambia’s Fifa referee, Gladys Lengwe has been appointed to officiate the final match of the 2018 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations between defending champions Nigeria and South Africa.

Lengwe, who has been making great strides in her career already, has a Fifa Under-17 Men’s World Cup and Fifa U-20 Women’s World Cup (this year) under her belt.

The 40-year-old is also tipped to be part of the 2019 Fifa Women’s World Cup in France.

She has another big opportunity to justify her credentials where the stakes are high again – the final of the 11th Women’s Afcon – after handling the tournament opener between the same sides at Cape Coast on November 18. That match saw South Africa snatch a late 1-0 win through Thembi Kgatlana.

At the Accra Sports Stadium on Saturday, Lengwe will be assisted by Madagascar’s Lidwine Pelagie and Bernadettar Kwimbira from Malawi as first and second assistants.

The fourth official will be Thioune Fatou from Senegal.

The match kicks off at 16:00 GMT.
