Veteran Lidya Tafesse to referee Ghana-Algeria opener

Referee Lidya Tafesse has been chosen to officiate the 2018 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations tournament opener between hosts Ghana and Algeria.

The match is scheduled for 15:30 GMT kickoff at the Accra Sports Stadium on Saturday, November 17.

Experienced Ethiopian, Tafesse, 38, will be officiating in her fourth successive Nations Cup – having previously appeared in the 2012, 2014 and 2016.

The top liner between the Black Queens and Les Verts Dames will see referee Tafesse assisted by Queency Victoire of Mauritius and Mary Wanjiru of Kenya on Line 1 and 2.

Maria Packuita Rivet, also from Mauritius, takes the role of the fourth official.

The tournament is being hosted for the first time in Ghana and serves as the qualification to the 2019 Fifa Women’s World Cup.

The gold medalists, silver medalists and bronze medalists will snatch the three slots available for the continent at France 2019.
