New York City decline to keep Ebenezer Ofori after loan spell

Ghana international Ebenezer Ofori’s stay with New York City FC has ended following the MLS side’s decision to decline contract options on the midfielder.

The former New Edubiase and AIK star joined NYCFC on loan in February for the 2018 MLS season from German side vfB Stuttgart after struggling for regular playing time there.

His NYCFC stats in the just ended season indicate he played 28 matches and scored once while picking up a red card and three yellows in the process.

But head coach Domenec Torrent, who took over the coaching chores in June after the departure of Patrick Vieira, does not see the Black Stars defensive midfielder as part of his plans.

Ebenezer Ofori will have to revert to Germany to sort his future with Stuttgart who are struggling in the Bundesliga – at bottom of the league table after 12 matches.

In a release Thursday, Ofori, 23, finds himself in the same situation as midfielder-defender Kwame Awuah who plays for the Canada national team. Awuah will have to look for a new team in the 2019 MLS season.

Kofi Opare is currently out with foot injury

In related development, D.C United have also refused to exercise their option on Mampong-born defender Kofi Opare. The 26-year-old is out on the sidelines for 4-5 months following a surgery on his left foot in October.

He had made 11 appearances for D.C in the 2018 MLS prior to his injury. Overall, Opare made 65 appearances for the team since joining during the 2014 season.
