‘Cape Coast 80% ready for AWCON’ – Venue Officer

2018 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations tournament venue, Cape Coast, is 20% short of completion, Venue Officer Asante Forkuo has said.

The coastal city will be hosting teams in Group B – Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya and Zambia – of the 11th edition of the flagship women’s competition on the continent. Cape Coast will also host the second semi-final game (November 8) and the third-place match on November 30.

Cape Coast as a venue has the Nduom Stadium and Robert Mensah stadium earmarked as training facilities for Group B.

Speaking to the media, Mr. Forkuo assured the readiness of the match venue – the 15,000-capacity Cape Coast Stadium. He however revealed challenges with one of the training facilities to be used by the teams, the Robert Mensah Stadium.

“So far, 80% of the work here is completed. The pitch, media stands, wash room, lighting system, score board and other facilities [at the Cape Coast Stadium are] in good condition to be used,” he told the media.

“Works at the Robert Mensah Stadium is what seems dragging its feet, but there are other alternatives which we are proposing to CAF to consider. The Glow Park [is on standby],” Asante Forkuo added.

The 2018 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations kicks off with Group A games in Accra on Saturday, November 17.

Group B takes its turn on Sunday where defending champions Nigeria take on South Africa (already arrived) with Zambia also facing Equatorial Guinea in the second match of the day.

Three top nations to emerge from the competition will represent Africa at the 2019 Fifa Women’s World Cup in France.
