Starlets miss out on 2019 U-17 Afcon to Nigeria

Ghana, Saturday night, surrendered the only ticket for Wafu Zone B via a penalty shootout defeat to Nigeria in the final of the qualifying tournament to the 2019 Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations.

The tensed encounter in Niamey saw the Black Starlets dominating the Golden Eaglets in the first 45 minutes but no goal was produced.

Ghana found the breakthrough in the 54th minute via forward Taufiq Shaibu but Akinwunmi Amoo made sure the lead was short-lived as he pulled level moments later.

The game ended 1-1 after regulation time with the winner needed to be determined by spot kicks as per tournament rules.

Nigeria went on to win 3-1, handing themselves the opportunity to chase their third Afcon title at the U-17 level.

As Wafu B Champions, the Golden Eaglets will represent the Zone at the 2019 Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations to be staged in Tanzania. A semi-final berth at that competition also gains them one of Africa’s slots to the World Cup in Poland.
