Appiah downplays Wanyama absence ahead of Kenya duel

Black Stars coach Kwasi Appiah believes the absence of Kenya skipper Victor Wanyama will not grant his side an easy duel.

The Harambee Stars are eager to claim victory after losing 2-1 to Sierra Leone in their first Group F qualifier. At the Kasarani Stadium on Saturday, the East Africa nation will miss their English-based star against a formidable Ghana side, that thrashed Ethiopia 5-0 at home..

The Spurs number 12 was among the 38 players summoned by Kenyan gaffer Sebastien Migne for the clash against Ghana but couldn’t join camp despite gaining full fitness a week ago.

“His[Wanyama] absence doesn’t guarantee an advantage over Kenya. You guys should forget that perspective of a team depending on one player to perform or get positive results.

“I would have preferred to face a side led by Wanyama because I know his qualities very well but now his absence will give me more to think about because the other players in the Kenya squad, I don’t really know them,” Appiah told Goal.

Ghana will miss the services of FC Metz defender John Boye and Levante forward Emmanuel Boateng, who were named in Appiah’s squad but dropped out due to injuries. The 58-year-old gaffer is confident his side will record a positive result.

“We have the quality so we are not worried. In an away game like this, We need to be clinical upfront and also defend well.”

Ethiopia and Sierra Leone will also clash in the other Group F fixture at the Hawassa Stadium.
