2019 AfconQ: Sumaila gets late call-up for Ghana vs Kenya

Serbia-based defender Rashid Sumaila has received a late call-up to the Ghana squad after John Boye and Kassim Adams Nuhu withdrew due to injuries.

Boye failed to recover from an injury he suffered on Tuesday night in a French cup game against RC Lens while Adams sustained an ankle injury towards the end of the first half of Hoffenheim’s Bundesliga game against Freiburg on Saturday.

And Ghana coach Kwasi Appiah has opted to replace the duo with only the Red Star Belgrade centre-back.

Sumaila featured in both Black Stars friendlies against Japan and Iceland before the World Cup in June but got snubbed for the squad to travel to face Kenya in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

He is now due to arrive and train as part of a 20-man squad at the chosen camp base in Ethiopia. From Monday, Ghana will hold their preparations in Addis Ababa until the morning of September 7 when they take a short trip to Kenya for the crucial qualifier.

Kenya’s Harambee Stars host Ghana at the Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani-Nairobi. Kickoff is at 1300 GMT.
