Why Ashantigold sacked C.K Akonnor

Ashantigold Sporting Club; good start in the 2017/18 Ghana Premier League, placed second on the league log after the first round, effective management, league breaks and then finally head coach C.K Akonnor gets kicked out.

Getting informed of the Miners tactican’s sack, you might ask yourself in some few seconds; Why? But in the life of a football coach, it’s either you are hired or fired.

In a bid to clear several rumours on the dismissal, officials of the Obuasi based club have now revealed what triggered the contract termination of their 42-year-old gaffer.

It’s certainly not a one-side story. No! C.K Ak0nnor had earlier revealed that his employers had their minds on acquiring a foreign technical brain for the team and never cared about his splendid output. The former Dreams FC coach also added that bringing John Christiansen, the club’s technical director, meant he was already a goner.

But according to the team’s Chief Executive Officer Frederick Acheampong, their head coach displayed several unprofessional practices that couldn’t be ignored anymore.

“There are a lot of things, I would wish to disclose but I will say he was just unprofessional. Akonnor kept breaching the contract we had. I had a discussion with him on one of his travels to Accra, which the club had no knowledge of.

“It’s a matter of respect. If as the CEO I come to you for permission when I need players for official assignments, what stops you the head coach from just notifying the club when you want to travel during wa? We sacked him because of misconduct,” Acheampong told Kessben FM.

“Will you call your doctor because you’re not well and travel but ignore calling us or even the team manager before leaving? At least, some mutual respect could be shown.

The administrator cum journalist continued:

“C.K even went further comparing the pockets of Dr. Nduom (Elmina Sharks owner) and our bank roller (Dr. Kwaku Frimpong aka Champion) when we went to play them in Elmina.

Honestly, it was difficult to believe but when I asked him, he couldn’t deny the allegations. Even Champion knows the level of Dr. Nduom and wouldn’t waste time on such comparisons.

Acheampong further revealed the monetary motivation that was improved to better the coach’s condition of sevice.

“Trust is important, we came to meet a coach who received Ghc6,000 and topped it to Ghc 8,000 because we knew he was doing a great job. But to make such statements in the midst of your players? What mindset should we expect from the players?

“Even though Champion made it known that he always prefers a foreign coach but realistically, why would he increase your salary if he declined supporting you? It’s quiet disappointing that we have got to this level because he’s a former player of the club and might even return here.

That’s part of life and we shouldn’t forget that,” he concluded.

Technical director John Christiansen has now taken charge of the first team. The Danish is expected to maintain the good form of the side for the second round of the league.
