VIDEO: Essien tips Thomas Partey to become Ghana leader

Thomas Partey has been tipped by ex-Ghana international Michael Essien to follow Abedi Pele, C.K Akonnor, Stephen Appiah and Asamoah Gyan and become the leader of the senior national team, Black Stars.

The Ghana national team is gradually heading towards a new era of leadership as the experienced Asamoah Gyan regime looks to be phasing out.

Gyan, now 32, remains captain of the Black Stars which is being rebuilt by Coach Kwasi Appiah but has been missing most call-ups over the past year due to his fitness issues.

In an interview with GHOne TV, Michael Essien, who captained the national team on a few occasions during his days, was quizzed about his favourite player in the new age Black Stars and he said “I’ll go for Partey.”

“He is a good player and I think in the future he will lead the Black Stars.”

Thomas Partey’s impressive leadership qualities and charisma become glare in recent international games where captains Asamoah Gyan and Andre Ayew have been absent for Ghana.

Black Stars coach Kwasi Appiah has preferred to hand Partey, 25, the captain’s armband and the lanky Atletico Madrid midfielder has appeared to earn the support and respect of his colleagues.
