Fifa, Ghana gov’t settle on two-man liaison team for GFA

Fifa and Ghana’s government have agreed on a two-person liaison team to facilitate the country’s participation in upcoming international competitions while plans to resolve the situation regarding the administration of football continues.

Football activities are at a halt in Ghana following a corruption exposé by investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas in June.

Both the Ghana government and Fifa have held two meetings over the situation with the recent held in Zurich on June 29.

The World football governing body has been unable to take a definite stance on the situation after being informed of court actions undertaken by the government over the revelations in the expose.

According to Fifa, it is closely monitoring and assessing “relevant developments” but following the government’s commitment to have the various national teams remain in competition, the two parties resolved to name Dr. Kofi Amoah and GFA Technical Director Oti Akenteng to “ensure liaison with Fifa and Caf on international competitions issues.”

Dr. Kofi Amoah will act as head of the liaison team.

Below is a copy of a letter signed by Fifa General Secretary Fatma Samoura informing Oti Akenteng of his appointment:

“Fifa and Caf continue to closely monitor and assess relevant developments in relation to the current situation of the Ghana Football Association (GFA). Fifa understands that various court proceedings have begun in Ghana aiming to investigate the circumstances reported in relation to the GFA and various GFA officials. In light of this, with the primary objectives of both ensuring the continuous running of football and preventing any jeopardizing of Fifa/Caf’s ongoing review process of the situation of the GFA, please take note that as coordinated and agreed with Caf, a two-person team has been appointed to ensure liaison with Fifa and Caf on international competitions issues (e.g. the participation of the Ghanaian team in the Fifa U-20 Women’s World Cup France 2018).

The liaison team will be composed of yourself and Dr. Kofi Amoah as head of the team. The liaison team will remain in place until such time as a decision is reached on Fifa/Caf’s ongoing review process related to the situation of the GFA.

We thank you very much for taking note of the above.“

This paves way for Ghana’s Black Princesses to resume preparations towards next month’s Fifa U-20 Women’s World Cup in France.

Meanwhile, the Sports Ministry has also issued a three-point statement on the fallout of its meeting with Fifa.

The government delegation was made up of the Sports Minister, Mr Asiamah, Deputy Attorney-General, Godfred Yeboah Dame, Deputy Chief of Staff at the Presidency, Samuel Abu Jinapor and the Member of Parliament for Agona West Constituency Cynthia Mamle Morrison.
