Nine-man Sharks hold Berekum Chelsea to 1-1 draw

Elmina Sharks were reduced to nine men but earned a merited point from their Ghana Premier League matchday 3 outstanding fixture away to Berekum Chelsea on Sunday.

The game which was moved to the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi ended 1-1.

Berekum Chelsea took the lead in the 8th minute via a free-kick close to the edge of the box by Stephen Amankona.

That striked ended the first 45 minutes.

The second half however got much more physical, forcing referee Mac Lord Arhin who had flashed only one yellow card (to Felix Addo) in the first, to dish out five more as well as a straight red card late in the game.

Two of those cautions in a space of ten minutes saw Elmina Sharks’ defensive midfielder Ebo Mends given the marching orders on the hour mark.

But Sharks pulled level through Felix Addo in the 72nd minute.

Experienced striker Tanko Mohammed, after coming on for defender Ofoe Ofotsu eight minutes after recess, was also shown a straight red card in the 86th minute but Berekum Chelsea could not take advantage of their numerical advantage to snatch a win.

The point secured by Elmina Sharks pushes them to 6th position on 18 points – three behind leaders AshantiGold. Berekum Chelsea, on the other hand, are now 12th with 13 points.

Elmina Sharks’ forward and goal scorer Felix Addo was named NASCO Man-of-the-Match.
