Fixture pile-up forces GFA to freeze #GHPLwk13 & 14

The Ghana Football Association has postponed the next two Premier League games.

This has been necessitated by a fixture pile-up faced by defending champions Aduana Stars who have honoured only half of the 12 games played so far in the 2017/18 campaign.

There are as many as eight outstanding games with the Caf Confederation Cup campaigners scheduled to be involved in six of them.

The other games are Berekum Chelsea vs Elmina Sharks and the undecided fixture between the latter and Medeama which ended abruptly due to an assault on centre referee Nuhu Liman.

Following a GFA/PLB meeting on Monday, matchday 13 and 14 games which would have been honoured on the weekend of May 12-13 and midweek May 15-16 respectively have been put on hold to allow some of these games to be cleared.

Per Footy-Ghana.com’s observation, Aduana, who have a Confederation Cup home fixture against Morocco’s Raja Casablanca during the period, could clear either three or four of their outstanding league games.

A letter signed by Deputy General Secretary Alex Asante and distributed to all Premier League clubs with broadcast rights holders StarTimes in copy announcing the postponement reads:

“The Ghana Football Association in consultation with the Premier League Board has postponed the Match day 13 & 14 fixtures of the on-going 2017/18 Ghana Premier League to enable some outstanding matches be played and also make room for the African Youth Championship match between Algeria and Ghana to be played in Algeria and Ghana on 11th and 20th May respectively.

“It’s the wish of the GFA that all outstanding matches would be cleared before the second round resumes.

“Sorry for any inconvenience the change might cause.”

The first round of the 2017/18 Ghana Premier League had been scheduled to end on May 19 but the latest decision could see it move back by a week.
