Ayew brothers suffer relegation with Swansea

Ghana’s Ayew brothers – Andre and Jordan – officially suffered relegation from the Premier League with Swansea City after the side succumbed to another defeat, 2-1 at home to Stoke City on Sunday.

Both players played full throttle as goals from Pape Ndiaye and Peter Crouch after Andy King’s opener saw Stoke drag them along into the English Championship for next season.

Andre Ayew, who was re-signed by the Liberty Stadium outfit In the January transfer window, could not exert the impact the Swans had hoped for in their survival battle. The 28-year-old forward played 12 league games with no goal but made two assists – against former club West Ham in March and the final game of the season against Stoke.

The younger Ayew, Jordan, 26, was voted Swansea’s Players’ Player of the Season, after emerging the club’s top scorer with seven goals in the league.

Jordan’s personal strides could however not keep the Welsh club afloat.

But for his red card against Huddersfield in March – the fastest of the season, Jordan, who had become the most influential player in the side, could have featured in all Swansea’s Premier League games in the 2017/18 campaign.

That send-off saw him further miss an FA Cup match and two league games at a crucial moment for Swansea – a setback manager Carlos Carvahal believes took a massive toll on the club.

“That made things difficult for us, but we never complained. We were always positive and we achieved points.

“Then, in the crucial moment of the season, we lost our main goalscorer and one of our best players effectively for four games, because Jordan Ayew was sent off right at the beginning of the game against Huddersfield,” he told the club’s official website.

It remains unknown what the future holds for the Ayew brothers at Swansea City ahead of the 2018/19 season – some transfer activities during the summer cannot be ruled out.
