Karela 3-1 Hearts: Opoku Mensah comes off bench, bags hat-trick

William Opoku Mensah came off the bench to score a 17-minute Karela United hat-trick against Hearts of Oak on matchday 8 of the 2017/18 Ghana Premier League Wednesday.

The Phobians were ahead at halftime after scoring as early as the 11th minute through midfielder Daniel Sarkodie. He was put through on goal by Winful Cobbinah.

The Phobians dominated the first half and went into the break with the 1-0 lead.

But Karela, who had rested deputy skipper Opoku Mensah after he picked some knocks in last Sunday’s win at Wa, decided to unleashed their weapon of destruction right from the start of second half at the Cosby Awuah Memorial Park in Aiyinase.

He made his impact felt within two minutes by following up on a move by Donald Wellington to snatch the equalizer.

Opoku Mensah then made it 2-1 in the 49th minute before killing off the game with his treble in the 64th.

William Opoku Mensah’s magical second half display earned him the NASCO Man-of-the-Match award. He has also moved his goal tally to four.

Karela United have now gone five straight games unbeaten – with four wins and a draw in between. The Premier League newbies are now 2nd – same points, 14, with leaders AshantiGold. They next host Elmina Sharks on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Hearts of Oak have slipped to 9th position on the league log with 10 points.
