Akonnor biding time for Black Stars job

AshantiGold coach, C.K Akonnor is hoping to join the elite list of few footballers who rose to coach Ghana’s senior national team.

The ex-Black Stars captain is fast establishing himself as one of the finest technical brains in the domestic game.

Since picking up his badges after hanging up his boots, the 44-year-old has enjoyed stints at local sides Sekondi XI Wise, Hearts of Oak, Dreams FC and his current job with the Miners while spending time on attachment at former club Wolfsburg and very recently at Tottenham Hotspur as well as Celtic FC.

Akonnor, who was recently linked to the Ghana Under-20 men’s job, has revealed he aims for the ultimate, coaching the senior national team – currently handled by Kwasi Appiah – but maintained he is biding his time for a chance to take up the position.

“When it is my turn to lead Ghana, no one can stop it. I’m ready for that opportunity when there is a vacancy,” Akonnor told Ghanaweb.

“If I have to coach the U-17 and U-20 to get there, it is all in the hands of God. Human beings will try to put you down and try to retard your progress but once God says it is your time nothing will stop it.

“I am only believing in God and not humans. People talk about how capable I am to coach the national team but I am not flattered by what they say. I only respond positively and show signs that I am not flattered at all,” he added.

C.K Akonnor’s AshantiGold lead the 2027/18 Ghana Premier League after seven games. He is the receiver of Coach of the Month award for March.
