AshantiGold edge Karela to maintain perfect start

Defender Richard Osei Agyemang took to scoring duty to ensure AshantiGold continued their 100 percent start to the season and kept their lead at the top of the 2017/18 Ghana Premier League standings intact.

The Miners managed a 1-0 win over new entrants Karela United courtesy a second half striker by the centre-back at the Len Clay Stadium on Wednesday.

AshantiGold enjoyed a dominant first half but could not produce a goal.

Three minutes after the break, Coach CK Akonnor effected his first substitution – a like-for-like change which saw winger Prince Owusu taking over from Amos Addai.

In the 66th minute, AshantiGold finally found an opening via a set-piece as Osei Agyemang hit a free-kick won by James Akaminko from about 35 yards out straight into the back of the net.

Midfielder Appiah McCarthy nearly extended the lead two minutes later but his effort on goal got blocked by the Karela defenders.

McCarthy, the new signing from Asokwa Deportivo, was later named NASCO man-of-the-match.
