2017/18 GPL Matchday 1 postponed after new #OlyInjunction

The 2017/18 Ghana Premier League opening day games scheduled for this weekend have been postponed to an unknown date after Great Olympics dragged the Ghana Football Association to court again.

The aggrieved club is battling “the GFA to use its own rules” in adjudicating a pending boardroom case they believe would see them survive relegation from the Premier League.

Olympics initially sought for an injunction to stop the start of the new season without them but an Accra High Court refused their application despite admitting they have a prima facie case.

Basing on balance of convenience, the court refused to go into the merits of the injunction application because it would cause the league a further delay which would harm many other parties and stakeholders. Both the GFA and Olympics and the GFA were admonished to thrash out the matter failure of which the latter could go back to court.

The GFA, after the court ruling last week, went on with plans to start the new season without engaging Olympics with the Premier League expected to kick off on Friday after it was launched Monday night.

Olympics who feel they have been ignored went back to court to appeal the Accra High Court ruling and served the GFA with an injunction application pending appeal on Tuesday to stop the local league from starting.

The GFA, after consultations, Wednesday after confirmed they were unable to go ahead with kicking off the season in a letter signed by Deputy General Secretary Ismail Amin Gado.

“Please be informed that Match Day One of the 2017/2018 GPL has been postponed to a new date to be announced later,” reads the letter distributed to Premier League clubs.

Per the announcement, the Ghana FA is hoping the new court case could be cleared before the date for match day two games on the season’s calendar. The latest development also affects the start of the Division One League.
