Thomas Abbey: Hearts contract rebel reports for training

Out-of-contract Thomas Abbey was among the early birds to report for Hearts of Oak training Monday morning.

After defeating Karela United 1-0 at the Cape Coast Stadium last Saturday, the Phobians are back in Accra to continue preparations for their second game in the ongoing Ghalca G8 Tournament.

The attacker has been out of contract since the end of the 2016/17 season and has been linked with a move abroad.

Abbey sparked doubts over his long-term future with the Phobians when he rejected the club’s offer of an extension and distanced himself from pre-season training.

Close sources tell Footy-Ghana.com that the former Windy professional trainee did so over “unsatisfactory” financial terms put forward by the Hearts management.

However, after further negotiations backed by an improved offer, Abbey, who captained Hearts and scored 14 goals last season, is on the verge of a new deal – one year, we have been hinted.

“I have seen Abbey around this morning at training. At the moment, he has not signed a new deal but since he has reported, it is a sign that talks are progressing,” club spokesperson Opare Addo confirmed to Footy-Ghana.com.

Meanwhile, playmaker Winful Cobbinah could be on his way out as he considers offers from Denmark and the United States. He missed a couple of training sessions last week to chase some travel documents, Footy-Ghana.com understands.

“Yes, with Cobbinah there are deals for him but nothing has been confirmed so he is still training with us,” the Hearts official clarified.
