Referee Agbovi retires after 26 years

Experienced Ghanaian referee William Selorm Agbovi has decided to retire.

The well-travelled match official is leaving behind his whistle after close to 26 years in the job.

Agbovi, 45, first became a referee in 1992.

He has been one of the more recognizable names in officiating in the country and on the African continent.

Agbovi bows out with his shoulders high as he declares:

“I have been a referee since 1992 and spent 26 years with the whistle, but have never taken a bribe before, neither have I ever been beaten.”

Agbovi was named Ghana’s best referee on three separate times. His last major game on the local scene is the President’s Cup match between arch-rivals Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak in July last year.

Referee William Agbovi was the fourth official in the infamous 2018 Fifa World Cup qualifier between South Africa and Senegal which led to the lifetime ban of countryman J.O Lamptey.
