#GHPLwk28: Survival battle heats up, Aduana three points away from title

The status quo among the title chasers remained unchanged as all top 3 teams secured wins on matchday 28 of the 2016/17 Ghana Premier League on Sunday.

Having traveled to thrash the already relegated Bolga All Stars in Tamale, leaders Aduana Stars now need one more win to emerge champions for the second time in Ghana’s elite division.

WAFA SC also won to keep the pressure on Aduana while Hearts of Oak also accounted for Ebusua Dwarfs in Accra.

In the race for survival, wins for AshantiGold, Bechem United and Liberty who are tied on same points, 38, moves them four points from the drop zone.

Also, Inter Allies get to move just above the drop after defeating Medeama at El Wak.

A goal in each half from Hans Kwofie and Shafiu Mumuni helped AshantiGold to defeat troubled Tema Youth 2-0 at the Len Clay Stadium. The Miners are now at 10th position with 38 points while Tema Youth now drop into the relegation quagmire – at 14th position.

Bechem United 1-0 Asante Kotoko

The Hunters left it very late to pip Asante Kotoko by a goal at the Nana Fosu Gyeabour Park in Bechem. As the game looked to be heading for a draw, midfielder Sadi Haji Abubakar popped up to break the hearts of the Porcupine Warriors with a goal in the 4th minute of additional time.

Bolga All Stars 1-4 Aduana Stars

Aduana Stars inched closer to winning the 2016/17 Ghana Premier League after whipping Bolga All Stars 4-1 at their own backyard. Derrick Sasraku bagged a brace while Nathaniel Asamoah and Sam Adams scored a goal each for the Dormaa-based club. Samuel Norgbey got the consolation goal for the hosts.

Currently on 54, Aduana Stars are just three points away from clinching their second league title.

Elmina Sharks 0-1 Great Olympics

Relegation-threatened Accra Great Olympics traveled to stun in-form Elmina Sharks at the Nduom Stadium on Sunday. Daniel Appiah delivered the sucker punch late in the game.

Hearts of Oak 2-1 Ebusua Dwarfs

With two games to end the season, the Phobians appear to be sealing third spot. A free-kick strike from playmaker Winful Cobbina and another goal from defender Joshua Otoo helped Hearts to beat Ebusua Dwarfs 2-1 at the Accra Sports Stadium. Joseph Esso pulled one back for the visitors. All three goals of the match came in the first half.

Inter Allies 2-0 Medeama

The ‘Eleven Is To One’ finally moved above the relegation zone, a place they have flirted in over the past few weeks after beating Medeama 2-0 on Sunday. Wahab Ackwei scored first from the penalty spot before Hashmin Musah cushioned the lead with a headed goal. Inter Allies now move to 13th position with 36 points.

Liberty 4-2 Berekum Chelsea

Liberty Professionals were forced to fight harder as they battle to keep their premiership status.

A late goal by Frederick Ansah saved the Scientific Soccer lads from a comeback scare posed by the visiting Berekum Chelsea at the Karl Reindorf Park.

Michal Ampadu scored in between two goals from striker Bernard Arthur as Liberty took a healthy 3-goal lead.
But Chelsea launched a fightback and reduced the deficit to one goal courtesy a brace from star forward Stephen Sarfo.

WAFA SC 3-0 Wa All Stars

The Academy boys took the opening seven minutes of second half to register three goals in their televised clash with Wa All Stars at the Red Bull Arena in Sogakope.

Centre-back Musah Nuhu broke the deadlock with a header three minutes after recess before quickfire goals from Prince Obeng Ampem and Coulibaly Mohammed in the 51st and 52nd minutes respectively.

The win means WAFA have achieved their season’s 50-points target while also maintaining their four points gap with leaders Aduana.
