GHPL: Survival day defeats condemn Olympics, Tema Youth to relegation

Accra Great Olympics and Tema Youth could not save themselves from relegation as they both lost on the road in their final matches of the 2016/17 Ghana Premier League.

The two clubs join whipping boys Bolga All Stars for the second tier next season.

Olympics were beaten 1-0 by Bechem United at the Nana Fosu Gyeabour Park.

A sumptuous Amed Toure strike in the third minute was the differentiating factor in the keenly contested duel on Sunday.

Olympics managed to find the back of the net late in the game but it was disallowed as the referee identified a foul on a Bechem defender before the ball was tucked home. Olympics finished the season at 15th position with 36 points.

Over at the Golden City Park, Berekum Chelsea ensured they will remain in the topflight with a 2-0 victory over Tema Youth with goals from Seth Larbi Appiah and Augustine.

The result effectively sees the Harbour City boys back into the Division One League after only one season.

Ironically, all the three relegated clubs – Bolga All Stars, Olympics and Tema Youth were the trio to gain promotion to the just ended 2016/17 Ghana Premier League.
