Aduana Stars claim second Ghana Premier League title

Aduana Stars have won the 2016/17 Ghana Premier League after a hard fought victory over Elmina Sharks at the Nana Agyemang-Badu Park on Sunday.

The Dormaa lads needed victory in the penultimate round of matches for the season and were made to labour for it, 2-1 against the impressive league debutants.

Sharks appeared ready to delay the title party for their hosts when they struck first few minutes to the end of the opening half.

Aduana Stars however responded quickly in the second half with left-back Abdul Rashid leveling matters within three minutes.

The game remained locked at 1-1 till the final ten minutes when a raiding Zakaria Mumuni got felled in the Sharks penalty area – and referee Uriah Glah did not hesitate in pointing to the spot with his whistle.

The game was brought to a hold as players of the visiting side and technical team protested the decision. Goalkeeper Joseph Essam also had to be replaced by Francis Arthur after injuring himself.

Attacker Sam Adams eventually converted the penalty to seal victory for Aduana who would go on to open a 7-point lead as close title chasers WAFA SC (on 50 points) also fell on the road to Ebusua Dwarfs at the Cape Coast Stadium.

With a game to spare, Aduana Stars thus become champions of the 2016/17 Ghana Premier League – their second title since joining the topflight. They won the league at the first ask when they gained promotion to the 2009/2010 season.
