Morocco have officially bid to take over as hosts of the 2018 Chan tournament, the country’s football federation announced Saturday.
Kenya, who were the original hosts of the competition, were stripped of the rights by the Confederation of African Football (Caf) last weekend majorly due to their lack of preparedness with infrastructure.
In a statement, the FRMF said that “Morocco’s decision to organize this continental competition is in line with the policy of openness initiated by the kingdom vis-à-vis African countries.”
“…Through its candidature, Morocco puts the experiences and expertise it has accumulated in recent years at the disposal of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in order to guarantee the success of this continental competition,” it added.
The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) headed by Fouzi Lekjaa also indicates that Morocco will put in place “the necessary mechanism” to host the selections to participate in the high African football mass, and will guarantee “adequate conditions” for the competition.
Angola, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Namibia, Nigeria, Sudan, Uganda and Zambia have all qualified for the competition specialized for domestically based players. Kenya completed the line-up as the host nation – a position they now forfeit.
The bidding process for the new Chan hosts which began last Sunday September 24 closes midnight October 1.
Caf has said it will determine and announce the new hosts for the 12 January to February 4, 2018 tournament by the end of the first week in October.
