VIDEO: Andre Ayew nets season’s first in West Ham win

Andre Ayew inspired West Ham United to a 2-0 win over Cheltenham Town in the EFL Cup Wednesday night.

It was Diafra Sakho, who opened the scoring after 40 minutes of play on his first start for the Hammers since November 2016 – spending much time in the treatment room due to recurring injuries.

Andre Ayew stepped things up and scored the second goal of the game three minutes after, with a low shot which crawled to the far post to beat the goalkeeper, following an assist from Sakho.

That was Ayew’s first goal of the season for West Ham and possibly a morale booster as he has failed to glitter in the opening fixtures of the Premier League.

The win has come at a better time for West Ham against the backdrop of suffering two defeats in their opening two matches in the Premier League. In their next league game, they visit Newcastle United who lost 3-2 to Nottingham Forest after extra time in the EFL Cup.

The 27-year-old has been handed a call-up for Ghana’s double header World Cup Qualifier against Congo.
