The Director General of the National Sports Authority, Robert Sarfo Mensah is calling on his outfits to cultivate the habit of taking proper care of facilities at the various stadia in the country.
According to the recently appointed NSA boss, he is critically looking at empowering the various state sports facilities to generate their own funds to cater for their maintenance.
The commentary, VIP and the VVIP Boxes at the Accra Sports Stadium have been closed down following a technical report by the Architecture and Engineering Services Limited (AESL), which marked them as high risk areas for spectators.
The Electricity Company of Ghana cut power supply to the capital’s stadium in May over a debt of 800,000 Ghana cedis and only restored electricity after the NSA settled part of the debt.
“We need to develop our facilities in such a way that they will be self-financed,” Robert Sarfo told Ultimate FM.
“If the desire are such that we always have to keep on depending on the central government to maintain these facilities, we will not be able to do that.
“If you look at the cost of maintenance, because of total neglect, I am even ashamed of myself if you take a look at the Accra Sports Stadium. It baffles me how have allowed such an important edifice to deteriorate.”
The Sekondi Sports Stadium and the Cape Coast Sports stadium will see renovation works as Ghana prepares to host the WAFU tournament in September. Parts of the Accra Sports Stadium have also been closed for renovation works.
