CHAN 2018: Konadu apologizes for Ghana failure

Black Stars ‘B’ coach Maxwell Konadu said on Sunday the team was completely shattered by the failure to qualify for yet another CHAN tournament and issued an apology to the country for that.

Ghana who had ample time of three months to prepare for the double-legged tie with Burkina Faso failed to make the finals of the tournament for home-based footballers for the second successive competition.

The Black Stars allowed Burkina Faso to pull off a shock 2-1 [and 4-3 aggregate] win over them in Kumasi and effectively snatched the available ticket to the upcoming CHAN in Kenya early 2018.

“We know we have disappointed a lot of people.

“We are sorry for disappointing the very fans that have been behind this team all this while but what else can we say,” Konadu who has largely been in charge of the team’s preparations said at post-match.

“The boys did their best and we guided them to how to be victorious, but unfortunately for us that couldn’t happen.

“The boys are all down, so the mood in camp is not good but we think that it is football, we did whatever we had to do in order to reverse the score-line but we couldn’t,” he added.

Konadu was at the helm of affairs when Ghana were denied participation at the 2016 edition in Rwanda by neighbours Ivory Coast. He said this latest failure will not push him to “quit”.

Sunday’s result in Kumasi marked the senior national team’s first ever defeat at home since the inception of the African Nations Championship in 2009.
