Black Stars: Newly-invited Waja vows to “give my best”

WAFA skipper Gideon Waja has welcomed his first major invitation to the senior national team, the Black Stars saying he will give off everything.

The 20-year-old has been included in coach Kwasi Appiah’s 24-man squad for the Black Stars’ double-header World Cup qualifiers against the Red Devils of Congo next month.

Waja has been one of the top performing central midfielders on the domestic scene, with his exploits making him the anchorman in the Black Stars ‘B’ team which failed to win a ticket to the 2018 CHAN.

After masterminding WAFA’s 2-0 victory over Asante Kotoko in the Ghana Premier League on Wednesday, Waja left the field to meet the news of a significant call-up into the Black Stars proper for the next two World Cup qualifying games.

“It is an honour for me and I am very happy for the call-up,” the young midfielder said in a quick reaction.

Waja notes this as an opportunity to showcase his talent and as well bag some experience from the rest of the stars.

“I will learn a lot from the senior players in the team and if I am given the opportunity, I will definitely give my best.

“It is not easy to make it into the national team so I am very happy for the invitation,” he told the media.

Waja took over captaincy of WAFA after Martin Antwi left to Inter Allies and has led them to the summit of the Ghana Premier League table with 46 points after 24 matches.

The Black Stars play their Congolese counterparts on September 1 at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi with the return fixture scheduled four days after in Brazzaville.
