Ghana, US discuss July friendly

Ghana and the United States are in talks for an international friendly, supersport.com has reported.

The match which will be between the Black Stars and the Yanks has been proposed for Connecticut in July.

In an interview with supersport.com, vice-chairman for the management of the Ghana senior men’s team, Wilfred Osei indicated that new coach Kwasi Appiah will have the opportunity to tune up his side for the 2018 World Cup qualifiers with two big games in June and July.

“Definitely in June [and] July, we will be active and would have to take those matches very serious not just for the financial benefits but that our rankings will improve.

“Choosing an opponent is very crucial. We are to play Mexico and they are one of the giants in Latin America. What we have to do is to make sure we give a good account of ourselves and win the match.

Though he refused to confirm who the Black Stars’ next opponent after Mexico will be, the high-ranking GFA member said: “there is another match we are considering [in July] but we have not concluded on a deal yet.”

Supersport.com has however confirmed the identity of the side as the USMNT. This is the third attempt by both Ghana and the United States to stage a friendly since their last meeting at the 2014 Fifa World Cup.

Ghana has faced the United States thrice, all at the last three Fifa World Cup finals, with the Black Stars winning two of the encounters in 2006 and 2010.

The GFA recently announced the Black Stars will be facing Mexico at the NRG Stadium in Houston on June 28.
