Afcon 2017: Black Stars complete qualification with Rwanda stalemate

Ghana sealed a seventh straight ticket to the Africa Cup of Nations with a 1-1 draw against Rwanda in their final Group H match in Accra on Saturday.

The Black Stars, who last missed out of the 2004 edition in Tunisia, lacked numerous first choices, including injured captains Asamoah Gyan and Andre Ayew as well as the likes of Mubarak Wakaso, Afriyie Acquah and Christian Atsu who were rested from the encounter completely.

Samuel Tetteh put Ghana ahead midway through the opening half with a low shot, his debut goal for the Black Stars.

The former WAFA SC attacker drove into the box, beating two defenders in the process before firing into the bottom corner of the net in the 24th minute.

The Avram Grant side dominated play for the remainder of the half and continued the trend for a large trunk of the second half.

Ghana were made to pay for their missed opportunities when Muhadjiri Hakizimana levelled matters for Rwanda off a sublime free-kick seven minutes from time.

Completing Group H of the 2017 Afcon qualifiers, Mozambique jumped from fourth to second place after a last-gasp goal earned a 1-0 win over Mauritius in Maput to which increases their tally to 7 points.

Group winners Ghana who will be making their 21st Nations Cup appearance at the Gabon tournament between January 14 and February 5 2017, amassed 14 points from six games.

The Black Stars were runners-up in the last edition of the Nations Cup.
