Grant right not to invite many local players for Rwanda clash – Saanie

Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Sannie Daara, has defended Avram Grant’s decision to call only two local players for the up-coming 2017 Afcon qualifying match against Rwanda.

Grant named only two locally-based players in his 23-man squad for the final hurdle against the ‘Amavubis’. Ashanti Gold defender Kadri Mohammed and Wa All Stars shot-stopper Richard Ofori were the only players included in the list.

With Ghana already qualified for Gabon 2017 Afcon tourney, there are calls that Grant should this time around field in local players at the expense of the foreign-based players.

However, Saanie has rejected those claims saying the nation has a reputation to protect.

“People have got the right to voice their opinion but the coach who is also in charge and works with the squad has also got his thoughts thinking that every opportunity he gets he must prepares the team,” Sannie told Starr FM.

“We should not forget that we have World Cup qualifiers coming up in October. In November, we also have another one coming up.

“Also, we need to maintain our status on the FIFA ranking. The reason why we are seeded in many tournaments is because of these things.”

The Black Stars will host Rwanda at the Ohene Djan Sports Stadium for their final Afcon match.

Ghana leads group H with 13 points.
