Unity Oil confirms interest in GPL sponsorship

Corporate Affairs Manager of Unity Oil, Alfred Frimpong has confirmed his outfit is considering sponsoring the 2015/16 Ghana Premier League.

The league has been without a sponsor since First Capital Plus Bank (now Capital Bank) suspended their five-year deal with the Ghana Football Association prior to the commencement of the season.

The marketing and sponsorship committee of the GFA has since been looking for a replacement and Alfred Frimpong has confirmed to Footy-Ghana his outfit has been in talks with stakeholders to become headline sponsors of the league.

“What is happening right now is that we are thinking of going into partnership with the GFA and see if we can sponsor the Ghana Premier League but then as we speak it has not been confirmed yet.

“It’s something that it’s in the pipeline. We are yet to get all stakeholders involved and look at the business aspect of it, look at other issues that will come up to see if it’s prudent for a Unity Oil to sponsor the league”

According to him, Unity Oil will want to have a longer partnership with the Ghana FA, hence they need to do a proper assessment of the situation before coming on board.

“It’s something that we are still considering because when you are coming in, you are coming in to stay unlike others who come and a year later, they can’t sponsor. That’s why we want to do our homework well, do the SWOT analysis so we can stay”

This will serve as a relief for the clubs who have had to played the league without a headline sponsorship.

Meanwhile, Samsung and the SGSSB are also reportedly interested in sponsoring the league. The former is said to be ahead in a ‘bidding war’.
