GPL Wrap: All Stars, Hearts march on with victories; Kotoko draw at Techiman

Leaders Wa All Stars kicked off the second round of the 2015/16 Ghana Premier League with another victory over Berekum Chelsea on Sunday.

Just like their last game in Berekum which ended the first round, All Stars completed back-to-back victories with a 1-0 score-line over their visitors at the Malik Jabir Park. All Stars scored the only goal of the encounter in the 35th minute through Ismael Ganiyu. They continue their lead with 31 points after match day 16.

Hearts of Oak labored against Dreams FC but finally broke the duck just after the hour mark at the Accra Sports Stadium. Striker Cosmos Dauda was on hand to tap home his 7th goal of the campaign after goalkeeper Philemon McCarthy failed to have full grasps of the ball off a shot in the 61st minute. Hearts remain second on the log with 29 points.

Asante Kotoko managed to salvage a point away at Techiman City. Lanky striker Stephen Manu elected himself to punish his former club after the Techiman lads were handed a penalty in the 25th minute of the encounter at the Nana Ameyaw Park. He converted his penalty, a goal which ensured his side led the game 1-0 at half time. Asante Kotoko however pulled level through captain Amos Frimpong’s 54th minute header. The 1-1 outcome leaves the porcupine warriors at third position with 27 points.

Captain Martin Antwi scored the first goal of the second round of the season after feeding onto a pass from Caleb Amankwaah in the third minute for WAFA SC against struggling champions AshantiGold. It ended up the only goal as at half time at the Sogakope Stadium. Charles Boateng made it 2-0 before Shaifu Mumuni pulled one back after spotting goalkeeper Razak Abalora way out of his lines. The lobbed effort was not enough as WAFA run away 2-1 winners.

At the Nana Fosu Gyeabour Park, Bechem United opened the scoring from a counter attack on 22 minutes against visitors Aduana Stars. Captain Issah Adamu’s long pass from midfield found striker Abednego Tetteh who showed no mercy to goalkeeper Joseph Addo for the opener. In the 39th minute, Abednego Tetteh turned the provider as he laid a through pass from outside the penalty area for Yaw Arnol to bend in the second goal for the hosts. 2-0 the first half ended. Aduana however managed to pull one back through Bright Adjei’s header in the 61st minute. With the 2-1 victory, Bechem now move to 13th position on the log with 18 points.

After missing a penalty just two minutes into the game, striker Frederick Boateng made amends in the 4th minute as he slotted past Hassaacas goalkeeper Michael Abu to hand Inter Allies the lead. Boateng’s early strike proved the difference as Inter Allies grabbed full points from the match played behind closed doors. 1-0.

At the Robert Mensah Stadium in Cape Coast, hosts Ebusua Dwarfs had to fall on a second half penalty converted by returnee defender Christopher Bonney to record a 1-0 victory over Liberty Professionals.
