The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has cut power supply to the recently commissioned Cape Coast Stadium.
The action taken by the power distribution company is as a result of owings of the newly constructed facility which runs in excess of GHc 700,000.
The amount is said to have been accrued from the beginning of construction works on the stadium site till date.
Confirming news of the stadium’s indebtedness and subsequent disconnection from the national grid, the Central Regional Director of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Kwaku Abedou Wilson says government is in the know.
“It is true that they owe so much. The total cost is accrued from day one of construction and the Ministry of Finance is aware,” he told Ultimate FM Sports.
Mr. Wilson continued: “Ghana government is supposed to bear all the costs. All the bills were sent to the Ministry of Finance for payment last year and not a single bill has been paid.
He further added that stadium also has piled-up debt payable to other utility service providers.
“The amount is even more than that. The total cost of utilities is over GHc1 million… This is just electricity, water bills have not come. Tomorrow, I’ll be writing a letter to the Finance Ministry to inform them [of the disconnection],” he said.
The 15,000-capacity stadium was constructed by the China Jiangxi Cooperation for International Economic and Technical Cooperation with a Chinese grant of 33 million U.S. dollars, the biggest ever China-aided project in Ghana.
The Cape Coast stadium is furnished with modern facilities for hosting multi sports events.
